Verizon Lets the Sun Go Down on Unlimited Data

Wireless carriers have begun to realize that when you offer flat-rate, all-you-can-eat deals, it tends to bring out the pig in people. Whether it’s food or beer or cellular data, customers will gorge themselves on it, and the buffet arrangement can quickly turn into a money-losing proposition if you don’t plan it out just right.

Yahoo’s CEO saga: Fake degrees and boardroom battles

A tale of two Facebooks

By Drawn ShaundaNo Comments

I love Facebook. I also hate it. And sometimes I’m indifferent, but not often.

As the big IPO day looms closer, lots of folks are taking a second look at this thing that started out as kind of a goofy diversion for college kids and has grown into the beast with 900 million heads.

Harvard’s “Facebook” Still Looks Like This

By Drawn ShaundaNo Comments

When Facebook launched in 2004, it finally motivated Harvard to get its act together and create a centralized database of student info. One of the facebooks has iterated its design substantially. One of them hasn't.

Prior to 2004, each dorm or house at Harvard had its own, structurally unique, online database.

Source: youtube.com

Considering that there are 17 freshmen dormitories and 12 upperclassmen houses, this made it difficult to track down someone's email address or phone number if you didn't know where that person lived.

Above is fake Mark Zuckerberg compiling data from each one individually in The Social Network in order to build Facemash.

In an article published in The Harvard Crimson on February 9, 2004—five days after Facebook launched—Zuck described some of the motivation for creating the site:

“Everyone’s been talking a lot about a universal face book within Harvard,” Zuckerberg said. “I think it’s kind of silly that it would take the University a couple of years to get around to it. I can do it better than they can, and I can do it in a week.”

College officials, however, also claimed that an internal facebook was also in the works:

“There is a project internally with computer services to create a facebook,” [Director of Residential Computing Kevin] Davis said. “We’ve been in touch with the Undergraduate Council, and this is a very high priority for the College. We have every intention of completing the facebook by the end of the spring semester.”

Source: thecrimson.com

Finally, on September 17, 2004, Harvard's internal facebook launched

Finally, on September 17, 2004, Harvard's internal facebook launched

It's basically just a search function. You can't upload or change your picture (although you can hide it). You can't 'like' anything and you can't write on anyone's wall or timeline because they don't exist.

As reported by The Crimson:

“We certainly didn’t launch this college facebook to compete in any way with thefacebook.com or to respond to thefacebook.com,” Davis said.

[Student council rep Andrew] Stillman said the two online facebooks serve different purposes.

“thefacebook.com is good for social networking whereas if you just want to look somebody up, the new facebook site is more useful,” Stillman said.

MenuTab Keeps Facebook Nicely Widgetized

By Drawn ShaundaNo Comments

Facebook’s march toward its IPO has put a harsh spotlight on the social network’s shortcomings, and one of the primary worries among prospective investors is that Facebook doesn’t have very sharp mobile chops. There are a million things it could be doing in mobile to draw in more revenue, they say, but it’s still an area in which the network moves painfully slowly.

Ask Engadget: Electric commuting on the cheap?

By Drawn ShaundaNo Comments

Image

We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget inquiry is from is from Warren, who wants to find an electrical moped within his budget. If you’re looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

“What’s the cheapest two-wheeled electric vehicle that goes over 45mph available in the US? I looked at the Gas-powered $2,500 Sym Symba, but as far as I can tell, I’d have to spend four times that much for an electric equivalent. Am I missing something? Thank you!”

Unfortunately, you are. The biggest barrier to joining the EV parade is the price of batteries, which are often more expensive than the vehicles they’re situated inside. For example, even a motorized bicycle like the Grace One is $6,000 — but that’s as far as our knowledge goes on the subject. Perhaps there is a solution out there, all it needs is for one of our friendly commenters to tell all in the river of text below.

RightScale CEO: We enable the enterprise cloud

By Drawn ShaundaNo Comments

Customers often approach “the cloud” as if it were some big-box store where IaaS (infrastructure as a service) can be purchased as a commodity. That may be marginally true for simple backup or for dev and test, where the risk of failure is not a big deal. But companies that wish to stand up mission-critical production applications on, say, Amazon Web Services, rapidly discover they need to become experts in the intricacies of the platform.

A CEO’s sins catch up with him

There are many ways to burn bridges with coworkers. But one CEO’s shenanigans stand out in my mind.

A few jobs and some years ago, I worked as the IT director at a company where I reported to the CEO, who had hired me a few years prior and thought of IT as a very important component for the business. I enjoyed a very good working relationship with him. He valued input from his managers and treated us with respect. However, he moved on one day and the board began looking for a replacement.

Researchers develop silicon ReRAM chip, send warning shot to Flash memory

Does the word ReRAM ring a bell? No? Well, the key point is that it’s much faster than NAND memory, and it’s making its way into chips from Elpida, Sharp and Panasonic. Further proof that ReRAM is on the up and up? Researchers at University College London have used this technology to make a chip that operates at 100 times the speed of standard Flash memory. The device is composed completely of silicon oxide, which improves the chip’s resistance, and it doesn’t require a vacuum to work (which makes it cheaper to produce). But this new chip is more than just a faster alternative to Flash; its ability to move between different states of conductivity means it can be configured as a memristor, or a device that handles both data-processing and storage tasks. In the long term, researchers hope this technology can pave the way for silicon oxide CPUs — and UCL is already using this design to help develop transparent memory chips for mobile devices. Need to know more? Feast your heart on the gritty details via the link below.

Microsoft encourages students to buy a PC, gives them a free Xbox 360 in return

Students. PCs. Free Xbox 360. The Redmond team’s at it yet again. Similar to last year’s deal, Microsoft’s hooking students up with a 4GB Xbox 360 if they drop some cash on one of its Windows machines. It’s simple: shell out over $699 on a PC, or $599 if you’re in Canada, and you’ll be walking out with a shiny new console free of charge — naturally, you’ll have to do so at participating shops such as Best Buy, Fry’s, Newegg, Staples, The Source and, of course, Microsoft’s own stores. The promo is set to kick off here in the States on May 20th, while those living in the True North can take advantage of it starting today. And before you ask — yes, you will need to show your scholar credentials to get in on the bargain.

Sprint introduces My Wireless STS service to assist folks with speech disabilities

Sprint’s had text-to-speech services on devices like the Samsung Epic 4G for quite some time, and now, looking to build up on that, the company’s introducing its My Wireless STS feature. The new speech-to-speech service aims to help people with speech disabilities by giving them access to an operator-assisted line every day of the week and all year round. Folks wanting to use the My Wireless STS will have to dial *787 from their device, after which a Now Network rep will start a call and repeat every spoken word — or ones that are unclear — depending on users choice. Relay Director, Michael Ellis, says Sprint is “the first in the industry to bring this service to market,” and that the project was developed closely with the help of speech disabled communities. If you’re interested in learning more, there’s a mighty presser waiting on you just past the break.

T-Mo delays HTC Amaze 4G online orders due to 'unforeseen issue,' has other recommendations

Hot off the heels of the One X and EVO 4G LTE spending some prolonged time at customs, now another member of HTC’s sensational family appears to be feeling the rigorous effects of the ITC. According to a recent email acquired by TmoNews, it looks as if the Magenta carrier is delaying shipments of the HTC Amaze 4G in the US, saying it’s facing “an unforeseen issue with receiving the product from the manufacturer,” and that it doesn’t know when the handset will be up for grabs again. What’s also interesting here, however, is T-Mobile going as far as recommending Sammy’s Galaxy S Blaze 4G as a substitute — which, let’s face it, can’t be good news for HTC. Here’s to hoping this all gets sorted out relatively soon. In the meantime, you can check out the aforementioned email in its entirety at the source below.

Dolby ups TrueHD lossless audio on Blu-ray to 96k, says every upsampled bit is amazing (video)

By Drawn ShaundaComments Off

Image

Just because your home theater can handle lossless audio doesn’t mean the sound is as good as it could be. Dolby is now giving Blu-ray producers using Dolby Media Producer Encoder v2 the choice of premastering TrueHD surround sound at an upsampled 96k. Along with just squeezing the most possible clarity and depth out of 48kHz audio, the encoding purportedly eliminates some of the harshness of digital sound through an apodizing (signal altering) filter. At least three projects have already been given the 96k treatment, and authoring firms like Technicolor have upgrades in place to give that noticeable boost to your next Blu-ray movie.

Space X’s Dragon launch… is go! (Update)

By Drawn ShaundaComments Off

We’re crossing our fingers and toes so hard we can barely type and walk, since it looks like the oft-delayed Dragon launch will take place tomorrow. SpaceX founder Elon Musk confirmed that the company had passed final launch review with NASA and that everything was set for the Falcon 9 to lift off at 4:15AM ET on May 19th. The lift-off will be broadcast live from the official website and is on course to be the first private spaceflight to dock and deliver essential supplies to the International Space Station. For our part? We wish the craft (and the ground crew) all the best and hope it’s a perfect flight — we wanna stay in a space hotel sooner rather than later.

Update: At around 5:06AM ET, Elon Musk tweeted that the launch had been aborted due to high combustion chamber pressure around Engine 5. It won’t be leaving for another couple of days.

$74 MK802 PC-on-a-stick beats Cotton Candy to market, has ICS on board

Unless you’re lucky enough to live in Scandinavia, you’ll have to wait till the end of summer to get your Cotton Candy fix. Aching to nab yourself a computer-on-a-stick before then? If you’re willing to step down in specs, the Chinese-made MK802 could be the PC in your pocket. For $74 (versus $199 for the Cotton Candy), this 7-ounce device gives you a 1.5-GHz Allwinner A10 CPU, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage and, like the Cotton Candy, Android 4.0. FXI’s version, on the other hand, packs a dual-core 1.2-GHz Samsung Exynos processor, and while the MK802 offers an HDMI port, the Cotton Candy includes an HDMI connector. The MK802 is slightly bulkier than its sweetly named competitor (3.5 inches vs. 3.1), but that Android logo on the front does wonders for its design cred. AliExpress.com is currently selling the MK802 with free shipping to the US — click the source link for a gander.

Otherwise, features such as live virtual machine migration and automated virtualization host failure recovery simply aren’t available.

Woot! A $200 32GB HP TouchPad

By Drawn ShaundaComments Off

images (7)Yeah, it’s not $99 and it’s refurbished but it’s still a TouchPad. The tablet was once heralded as an iPad killer. Now, I’m not sure if it could even kill a Notion Ink Adam in a head-to-head sales battle. But still, thanks to an honestly smart move from HP, the TouchPad and webOS is valuable to some in the development community. But you better act fast like previous TouchPad offers. This deal is up on Woot, where the Amazon subsidiary only has a limited number of items. The price is $195 for a 32GB WiFi TouchPad — not a bad deal for a slightly bulky tab capable of running Android.

Sprint CEO says they’ll make money on the iPhone… in 2015

By Drawn ShaundaComments Off

During their annual shareholders meeting, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse said they’re very happy with the iPhone, but admitted that it won’t be profitable for the company until 2015. Sounds crazy, but Hesse says they’re taking the long view, since offering the iPhone will stem the exodus of users going to other carriers just to get their hands on Apple’s smartphone.

Is Google Buying 4chan?

By Drawn ShaundaComments Off

No. Also: hahahahhahaa.

Just a friendly reminder not to listen to, like, 90% of professional tech “analysts.” From the end of a legitimate-looking newswire story, on a legitimate site:

Meanwhile, Google continues to work hard to stay ahead, finding new and growing areas to expand into. Most recently the company has begun discussions to acquire the website 4chan which would bring with it a large user base.

First of all, this makes no sense. None. Google is the largest site in the world! Google doesn't need to bring in users bases fro — you know what, I'm not even going to bother. Google is Google and 4chan is 4chan. This reads like a joke.

For kicks, I asked 4chan founder Chris Poole what he had to say:

SEEMS LEGIT

Then pointing to the writer's slightly… unprofessional-looking contact info:

Going native: The move to bare-metal cloud services

By Drawn ShaundaComments Off

I’ve been saying for some time that virtualization and cloud computing are not mandatory partners. Certainly, virtualization is a tool that makes creating and managing cloud computing services easy. However, more and more, as organizations move to cloud computing, they’re asking for the omission of that virtualization layer for better performance and control. Cloud providers are now agreeing to those demands.

Don’t be so trigger-happy for a remote wipe

By Drawn ShaundaComments Off

When I talk to IT pros about the proliferation of user technology, aka consumerization, it doesn’t take long before the subject of remote wipe comes up. It’s become almost a checklist item in any company that supports BYOD and increasingly for those who supply mobile devices. After all, regardless of who buys the device, it may contain corporate secrets that need to be kept away from prying eyes.
